List it yourself if it runs and drives
A car with a current sticker that starts, drives and passes has a private value well above scrap. If that's yours, list it - you'll do better, and an honest junk buyer will tell you the same.
Call a junk buyer once it stops moving
When a car won't start or won't pass, the private market shrinks to hobbyists and flippers, most of whom want it free and will happily leave you waiting three weeks. Meanwhile it's occupying a space and possibly collecting tickets.
Count what listing actually costs you
Photos, the listing, the messages, the no-shows, the haggling, and then the problem of physically moving a car that doesn't run. A tow you pay for eats a serious chunk of a small sale price.
Parting it out rarely pays
It works if you have space, tools, time and somewhere to store parts. Most people pull two or three valuable pieces, find the rest hard to sell, and end up with a shell worth less than the whole car was.
The genuine judgement call
A car that runs but needs one expensive repair. Get a repair estimate and a junk quote and compare them. If the repair costs more than the car will be worth fixed, the decision makes itself.
